To distinguish the chambers a foraminifera created during an experiment (red), we pre-stain the older chambers with calcein (green) before the experiment. Foraminifera are continuously adding chamber during their life cycle. We use controlled experiment in the laboratoy to investigate mechanic and chemical processes involved in this process. Foraminifera are collected and transported to the lab, where they are incubated with the fluorescent calcein. This molecule is then incorporated in the shell, and will allow us to distinguish old chamber (green) from the new ones (red) using a stereomicroscope equipped with epifluorescence optics .
